If you live in the northern United States you’ll be no stranger to cold snowy winters, and many people find that the long hours of darkness have them craving a hit of vitamin D, or just a little warmth. These places are surprisingly easy and affordable for those in the northern US, so throw your swimsuit in a case and get ready to catch some rays.
This may seem a bit obvious, but there are plenty of places a little off the beaten track that offer affordable places that can also be quiet and peaceful; not your standard Spring Break style holiday. Panama City and Miami are good for those that want a bit of nightlife, and Clearwater Beach has the more peaceful hotels with sandy beaches and warm Gulf water. The classic resorts of Disney world and Cape Canaveral are much cheaper and quieter in January than in high season, the perfect place for a little winter sun.
Puerto Rico has a bad reputation for many people, but it is actually safe, clean and affordable; of course there are places to keep away from, but this is the case with most destinations. You can visit the underground Camuy Caves, explore the rainforest or swim in a bio luminescent bay at night. There is also plenty of history here for those that like a little culture with their sunshine; visit the Spanish fort of Castillo de San Cristobal to get your fix.
Costa Rica is a wildlife lover’s paradise, and perfect for getting back to nature whilst warming your bones in the sun. La Fortuna de San Carlos has rainforests, an active volcano and breathtaking waterfall, with plenty of tasty local food to keep you fuelled up for adventure. Sun worshipers can relax on Playas del Coco, and throw in a spot of snorkeling in the warm, clear sea before flying down a zip line for that great adrenaline rush. Costa Rica definitely has plenty to offer.
This is the obvious choice of winter break for anyone who loves their music and daiquiris. Jamaica is famous for its palm tree lined, white sand beaches and reggae music, as well as wonderful seafood and rum. Whether you choose to visit Montego Bay, Kingston or another quieter south coast resort you’ll find plenty to keep you occupied.
Take in the street life, snorkel in the clear blue sea or simply lie on the beach and sip a Pina colada; whatever you choose the chilly northern weather will seem like a distant memory after a few days in Jamaica.
A lot of classic summer sun resorts are much cheaper in the winter and still pretty sunny compared to the chilly climes of the north. So if you’re feeling sluggish and a little bit down, back up your bags and head for a little bit of winter sun; there’s no better way to recharge your batteries and put a smile on your face and a spring in your step.
